Jim Mathis

Jim Mathis
Senior Pastor

Jim grew up in Saginaw. Michigan. He gave his life to the Lord Jesus Christ at Bay Shore Camp in 1959, graduated from Taylor University (IN) in 1964, and Asbury Seminary in 1968.

He accepted the call to the Gaylord Evangelical Free Church (GEFC) in 1987 after serving the Upland (IN) Evangelical Mennonite Church. Both ministries experienced tremendous growth under his direction.

GEFC has been blessed by his preaching, leadership and counseling skills and has growth during his 20 years of service. It now averages 600 plus in worship and has six fulltime ministry staff and several support staff to serve the congregation.

Jim's love for the people of Gaylord has been reciprocated. He was honored as the town's Burgermeister (first citizen) and, most recently, the Chamber of Commerce's Businessperson of the Year (2004).

Jim and his wife Joan have two grown children who are married and live in the community.

Joe Sereno
Associate Pastor

Joe represents the Church to our newcomers, those who are ill or hospitalized, and to our shut-ins. In addition, he gives organizational leadership to our fellowship events and works with both the deacons and deaconess in carrying out their duties. He is active in community events including the Big Brothers/Sisters program and youth sports.

Joe comments, "I had attended church my entire life but it was not until college that I made a commitment to Jesus Christ. From that point on I felt his calling into ministry. The Lord even used my experiences at a summer camp to meet the girl who would one day become my wife. So He has always taken care of me and provided for everything. How could I do anything less that respond to His calling?"

Joe is a graduate from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and received a Masters of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.

Joe and his wife Saundra have four children.

Newell Cerak
Associate Pastor

Newel Cerak is a New Jersey boy from the town of Clayton. He graduated from Taylor University (Indiana) and came to Gaylord in 1989 after serving as the youth director of the Upland Evangelical Mennonite Church.

He serves as the Pastor of Young Adults (High School through college-age) and has been working with youth for 28 years. He feels that God has called him to continue serving in this capacity for some time to come. He attributes his good health and good looks to God and the youth.

His wife, Colleen, actively serves with him. They have two daughters.

Joshua Rupp
Joshua Rupp
Director of Music and Worship Planning

Joshua provides leadership to the many music ministries GEFC has. He oversees an extensive music program that includes multiple worship teams, choirs (kids, youth and adult), orchestra and support ministries.

He is a graduate of Cedarville University where he earned a degree in Church Music Ministry. He and his wife Julia have a two year old daughter, Abigael and a six month old son, Brayden.

Joshua has a passion for worship that glorifies the Lord Jesus with wholehearted devotion. His favorite worship artists include Tommy Walker, Chris Tomlin, Stewart Townend and the Desperation Band. If you want to listen to any of these artists, ask Joshua and he'll let you sign-out a CD.

Jack Dutton

Jack Dutton
Director of Counseling Ministries

Jack’s life has been ordered around his childhood acceptance of Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior and his commitment to follow where ever God would lead him. By 12th grade he accepted a clear life-long calling to full time ministry. After 2 of years of Bible College he graduated from Cedarville University with a B.A. in psychology with a Bible focus, earning in 1991 a M.A. in Professional Christian Counseling from Liberty University. In 1993 he became a Michigan Licensed Professional counselor.

Since 1972 his ministry has included camp ministry, the youth pastorate, working with troubled teens and their families, coordinating a Christian counseling center for 10 years and from 1998-2005 as an associate pastor. Before coming to Gaylord in the fall of 2007 was an unexpected experience of working in 2 county mental health settings. This was an enriching experience that challenged him greatly to think ’’outside the walls’’ of a church building to meet people where they are.

Jacks role as Director of Counseling Ministries is not just to directly work with hurting people, but to facilitate a number of innovative ministries with a special focus on mobilizing others to use their gifts to minister to hurting people.

Jack has been blessed since 1977 with his wife Janet, a R.N. and 2 wonderful daughters, Cheresa (1984) and Angela (1986).
